A real little masterpiece

Mark Girouard, author of The Victorian Country House, described Treberfydd as completely lacking in pretentions, making it "one of the most attractive and successful of Victorian country houses." According to Pearson's biographer, the house, Llangasty Church and nearby school house show the architect's early Victorian phase at its best, calling them a "Tractarian Utopia."
Occupied by the Raikes family since it was built, nearly all of the original features of the house remain. These include elaborately carved stone fireplaces, glazed tiles, carved oak staircases, stained glass windows and recently restored portraits of Robert and Frances Raikes by the Victorian artist Richard Brooks. Robert Raikes' extensive library remains virtually untouched and it includes a portrait of Charles II given to the Raikes family for its support when he was restored to the throne in 1660.

Like many Victorian houses of the period, Treberfydd has a school room, a scullery, a nursery, a back staircase, a billiard room and even a secret passageway. The house also contains fine examples of the original Gothic oak furniture designed by Pearson.
House tours are nearly always conducted by a member of the Raikes family. In 2012,  gardens will  be open to the public from July 21 to August 17th between 2pm and 6pm. There will be guided tours of the house every day, at 2pm and 4pm. Tours at other times can be arranged by appointment. Price: House and Gardens: £5.00 adults (including tour); Garden only: £3.00; Children under 14: free.
There is plentiful parking at the house. The gardens and ground floor of the house are accessible to buggies and wheelchairs. Tea and cakes can be provided by prior arrangement for a small fee. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
